Every AI companion comparison ranks platforms against each other. The problem: the platforms aren't competing for the same user. Replika and Janitor AI are both "AI companion platforms" the way a bicycle and a truck are both "vehicles." The right one depends entirely on what you need it for.

Instead of another ranked list, here are five questions. Your answers filter the field from dozens of options to one or two that actually match how you'll use the product.

Question 1: What do you actually want from this?

This is the filter that eliminates 80% of the options immediately.

"I want a companion who knows me over time." You want a relationship platform. The field narrows to Nomi AI (best memory, multiple companions), Kindroid (deepest personality customization), and Replika (most polished, cheapest annually). Everything else is designed for variety rather than depth.

"I want to chat with lots of different characters." You want a character library. Character AI (largest library, moderated) or CrushOn AI (largest NSFW library). Don't pay for a relationship platform if you want variety.

"I want creative roleplay and storytelling." You want a roleplay engine. Janitor AI + OpenRouter (highest quality ceiling), DreamGen (narrative prose quality), or SillyTavern (total control). Don't pay for a visual companion platform if you want collaborative fiction.

"I want something that looks and sounds real." You want a multimedia companion. Candy AI (images, video, voice) or Replika (3D avatar, AR mode, polished voice). Don't pay for a text-first platform if visual presence is what you value.

"I want emotional support or a therapeutic tool." You want a wellness platform. Woebot (free, most researched), Wysa (CBT+DBT+mindfulness), or Replika (emotional companionship, not clinical therapy). Don't use an NSFW platform for emotional support. We covered the distinctions in our AI therapist guide.

Question 2: How much setup are you willing to do?

"Zero. I want to sign up and start talking." Replika (one-minute setup), Character AI (immediate browsing), or CrushOn AI (instant character access). These platforms handle everything invisibly.

"I'll spend 30-60 minutes on setup if the result is better." Janitor AI + OpenRouter (API configuration for model choice) or Kindroid (Codex personality writing for deep character design).

"I'll spend 1-2 hours for total control." SillyTavern + Ollama. Local installation, model download, character card import. The reward is zero restrictions, zero cost, zero privacy concerns, and quality that scales with your hardware.

Question 3: Does NSFW content matter?

"Yes, it's important." The field splits cleanly. Platforms that allow it: CrushOn AI, SpicyChat, Janitor AI (model-dependent), Nomi AI (on paid tiers), Kindroid, GirlfriendGPT, SillyTavern (unrestricted). Platforms that block it: Character AI. Platforms with complicated history around it: Replika.

If NSFW is your primary criterion, read our best NSFW AI chatbot ranking. If it's secondary to other needs, pick from the platforms that allow it based on your answers to the other questions.

"No, I don't need it." Good news: every platform works for you. Pick based on the other questions. Character AI and Replika are strong mainstream options.

"I'm not sure." Start with a platform that allows it but doesn't center it (Nomi, Kindroid). You can ignore the capability if you don't want it.

Question 4: What's your budget?

"Free." Character AI (unlimited messages, ads, queue times). The best free AI companion experience by a significant margin. Woebot if you want therapeutic support specifically.

"Under $10/month." Replika Pro annual at $5.83/month (cheapest premium). CrushOn Standard at $5.99/month (cheapest NSFW). Nomi annual at $8.33/month (best memory). Character AI Plus at $9.99 (removes ads and queues). Kindroid Standard at $9.99 (personality control).

"$10-20/month." Every platform is available to you. Pick based on features rather than price. Candy AI (~$12.99), Kindroid Premium ($13.99), Nomi monthly ($15.99), Replika Pro monthly ($19.99).

"I want to spend nothing ongoing." SillyTavern + Ollama. Free software, free models, your hardware. One-time hardware investment if you don't already have a capable GPU.

Question 5: How much do you care about privacy?

"A lot." SillyTavern running local models. Your data never leaves your hardware. No trackers, no server storage, no company access. This is the only option that genuinely solves the privacy problem.

"Somewhat." Avoid the worst offenders. CrushOn AI (45 trackers/minute) and Muah AI (1.9M user breach) are the most documented privacy risks. Replika and Nomi have cleaner (though imperfect) privacy postures. Use a throwaway email on any platform.

"Not really." Use whichever platform matches your other criteria. Understand that every commercial AI companion platform collects and stores your conversations. The Mozilla review is worth reading even if privacy isn't your primary concern.

The cheat sheet

If you read the questions and want the fastest possible answer:

Most people: Start with Replika (free trial, then $5.83/month annual). It's the lowest-risk entry point with the most polished experience.

If Replika feels shallow after 3 weeks: Switch to Nomi AI for deeper memory.

If you want character variety: Character AI (free) or CrushOn (NSFW).

If you want maximum quality and don't mind setup: Janitor AI + OpenRouter.

If you want total control: SillyTavern.

The week-three test applies regardless of which platform you choose. Use your first platform for three weeks before deciding it's "the one" or switching. The experience at week three is more predictive than the experience at day one, and most users who will be happy long-term survive the third week. Most users who won't be happy churn before it.
