About Pocket Animus

Pocket Animus covers AI companion platforms — the apps people talk to, pay for, and mostly don't discuss in public.

What this site does

It answers the questions the marketing pages avoid. What does this platform actually cost once the annual discount and the token meter are both accounted for? Does the memory survive past message twenty? Is the free tier a product or a countdown? Which app fits the specific thing you want, rather than which one pays the most for the recommendation?

The library currently runs to 440 pages: 36 reviews, 277 guides, 57 comparisons, and 70 insight pieces on where the category is heading. It has been publishing since April 2026.

Who writes it

One person, under the pen name Ash Kepler. Not a staff, not a newsroom, and not a rotating cast of freelancers — a single reviewer writing under a byline about a subject most readers would rather research privately than discuss under their own name. The pseudonym is stated openly on the author page rather than dressed up as an institution.

The editorial stance

Three commitments do most of the work here.

Platforms get used before they get written about. Accounts are created, subscriptions are paid for out of pocket, and features are exercised over the periods the reviews describe. Where something has not been tested first-hand, the page says so and attributes what it reports instead.

The checkout screen is the authority on price. Marketing pages, app-store listings, and press kits disagree with each other and with the actual bill more often than this category admits. Prices here are what the payment screen said.

The weak points get named. Every platform covered here is bad at something, and a review that can't say what it is isn't a review. That applies to the platforms that pay commissions exactly as it applies to the ones that don't.

How it makes money

Affiliate commissions, on some — not all — of the platforms covered. A commission never buys a ranking, a score, or a softened weak-points section, and plenty of pages here carry no commercial link at all. The full arrangement, including which relationships exist, is set out in the affiliate disclosure.

The rest of the paperwork

How platforms are tested, how prices are verified, how corrections are handled, and how AI tools are used in producing this work are all in the editorial standards. Corrections, questions, and complaints are welcome at the contact page — factual errors get fixed and logged.
