What to look for in an AI companion before you commit
The things that matter after the free trial wears off, and the things that don't matter as much as the marketing wants you to think.

Every AI companion platform looks amazing on the landing page. Beautiful character art, glowing testimonials, a free trial that lets you experience just enough to get hooked before the paywall drops. The problem is that what makes a platform look good in the first twenty minutes is almost entirely uncorrelated with what makes it good over the next six months. The shiny features that catch your eye on day one, the image quality, the character variety, the slick interface, matter far less than the structural choices you can't see until you've been using the platform for weeks.
So what should you actually evaluate? And how do you figure out whether a platform is going to hold up before you've invested the time and money to find out the hard way?
The memory question comes first
If you're looking for anything beyond casual short-term chat, the platform's memory architecture is the single most important thing to evaluate. Does the character remember what you talked about last week? Does it remember your name after three sessions? Does it maintain the personality you established, or does it slowly drift toward generic friendliness?
Most platforms claim "great memory" in their marketing. The actual range is enormous. Some platforms run sophisticated multi-layer memory systems that hold up for months. Others run basic sliding windows that forget everything beyond the last fifty messages. You can't usually tell which one you're dealing with until you've had about a dozen conversations, by which point you're already invested.
The best proxy before committing: look at user discussions on Reddit, Discord, or community forums for the specific platform. Long-term users are very vocal about memory quality because it's the thing that makes or breaks relationships with AI companions. If the subreddit for a platform is full of "why did my character forget X" posts, that tells you something the marketing page won't.
How the platform handles updates
Here's one that almost nobody thinks about before subscribing and almost everybody cares about after: what happens when the platform pushes an update?
Platforms update constantly. They change models, modify system prompts, adjust filter calibration, redesign memory systems, add features, remove features. Every update is a potential disruption to your ongoing experience. The character you've been developing for three months can feel like a different person after a Tuesday afternoon patch you didn't even know happened.
Good platforms communicate updates clearly, test them before pushing to production, provide recovery tools when things change, and don't silently modify behavior users depend on. Bad platforms push updates without notice, don't acknowledge when things break, and leave users to figure out what changed and how to adapt.
Replika's 2.0 rollout is the cautionary tale here. A memory architecture update disrupted thousands of long-running relationships. Users who'd built years of history with their companions experienced sudden personality shifts and memory loss. The platform handled communication poorly and recovery options were limited. That kind of disruption is survivable if it happens once. If a platform's update history shows a pattern of breaking things without warning, that's a signal about how much they value your ongoing experience versus their development velocity.
The content policy you're actually getting
Content policies are published on every platform's website and almost nobody reads them. Which is a shame, because the content policy tells you more about what your experience will actually be like than any marketing material.
What you want to know: what content categories does the platform allow and restrict? How strict are the filters in practice? Do paid tiers get different filter calibration than free tiers? Has the platform changed its content policy in the past, and how drastically?
A platform that positions itself as permissive but has a history of sudden content policy restrictions (Character AI did this, Replika did this) is telling you that the experience you're signing up for today might not be the experience you have in six months. A platform whose content policy has been stable for over a year is a safer bet for long-term use, even if that policy is more restrictive than you'd ideally want.
The question worth asking yourself: can I build what I want to build within this platform's stated content policy? If the answer is "only if the filters don't catch it," you're building on sand. Find a platform whose policies actually support your use case rather than one where you're constantly working around restrictions.
What the free tier actually tells you
Free tiers exist to convert you into a paying customer. They're marketing tools, and good ones at that. But they can also be genuinely useful evaluation tools if you know what to look for and what to ignore.
What the free tier tells you reliably: the quality of the underlying model (the conversation quality you experience for free is generally the same quality you'll get on paid), the character creation tools and how flexible they are, the basic interface and whether it fits how you want to interact, and the platform's general vibe and community.
What the free tier doesn't tell you reliably: long-term memory quality (you need weeks of sustained use to evaluate this), response speed during peak hours (free tiers often get deprioritized), image generation quality (usually severely limited on free), voice features (usually locked to paid), and filter calibration (sometimes subtly different between tiers).
The smart approach: use the free tier for a week. Don't commit emotionally to the character you build. Use it as an evaluation tool. Test the conversation quality across different topics. Try the character creation tools. Read the privacy policy. Check the subreddit. Then decide whether to pay.
The pricing model underneath
Not all subscription models are equal, and the structure of the pricing tells you something about the platform's relationship with its users.
Straightforward monthly subscriptions (one price, all features included) are the cleanest model. You know what you're paying, you know what you're getting, the platform's incentive is to keep you happy enough to stay subscribed.
Token or credit systems, where you buy bundles and spend them per message or per image, are designed to obscure the actual cost and exploit heavy usage patterns. The most manipulative apps track when you're emotionally engaged and hit you with premium prompts at that exact moment. If an app interrupts a conversation to ask you to buy more credits, that's a design choice optimized for extraction.
Freemium with aggressive upsells is different from freemium with gentle upgrade prompts. The gentle version gives you a good free experience and offers paid features through settings menus. The aggressive version deliberately degrades the free experience or uses emotional manipulation to push upgrades. "Your companion has something special to tell you, unlock Premium to hear it" is psychologically predatory regardless of how good the underlying product is.
Annual subscriptions are cheaper per month but lock you in. For a platform you've been using for three months and trust, annual makes sense. For a platform you just started evaluating, monthly is the safer choice regardless of the discount.
Privacy practices worth verifying
Covered in depth in the NSFW AI privacy post, but the short version for evaluation purposes: before subscribing, check three things.
Does the platform publish a clear, specific privacy policy? Not a vague legal document, but something that tells you concretely what data they collect, who can see it, how long they keep it, and whether they use it for training. Vague language is itself a red flag.
Can you actually delete your data? Look for a data deletion option in the settings. If it takes a support ticket and a 30-day waiting period to delete your account, the platform doesn't respect your autonomy around your data.
Does the platform use third-party trackers? This is harder to check directly, but Mozilla's Privacy Not Included research and various AI privacy review sites have documented tracker usage for major platforms. Platforms with dozens of trackers active from the first page load are monetizing your presence beyond your subscription.
The community around the platform
One underrated signal: does the platform have an active, healthy user community? Not just a large one, but one where people share tips, discuss features constructively, and help each other. A platform with a vibrant subreddit or Discord where power users share character cards, prompting techniques, and troubleshooting advice is almost always a better platform than one with a dead or purely-complaint-driven community.
The community is also your early warning system. When the platform pushes a bad update, the community notices first. When privacy practices change, community members who read the terms of service flag it. When better alternatives emerge, the community discusses them. Having access to that collective intelligence makes your experience better even when the platform itself doesn't change.
The things that matter less than marketing suggests
A few commonly-marketed features that matter less than they appear:
Character library size. Having ten thousand characters in the library sounds impressive but most users develop one or two ongoing relationships. A platform with a smaller but better-curated library often produces better experiences than one drowning in low-quality options.
Image generation. Nice to have, not essential for most companion use cases. The platforms with the best images often have the worst memory or the most restrictive content policies. If images are your primary use case, prioritize for that specifically. Otherwise, don't let flashy image previews drive your platform choice.
Celebrity or brand partnerships. "Official characters from [franchise]" adds marketing value but doesn't indicate anything about the underlying conversation quality, memory, or privacy practices.
Number of users. A platform having millions of users means it's popular. It doesn't mean it's good for your specific use case. Some of the best AI companion experiences happen on smaller platforms that invested in memory and conversation quality rather than marketing.
The features that actually predict long-term satisfaction are the boring structural ones: memory architecture, content policy stability, privacy practices, update communication, and pricing transparency. Not the exciting ones. The exciting ones get you to sign up. The boring ones determine whether you stay.
