Most AI companion platforms say "free." Most of them are lying. We graded every major platform's free tier on five specific criteria to separate the genuinely usable from the locked demos wearing a free label. Letter grades, no curve, no favors.

The grading criteria

Every free tier is graded on five things that actually determine whether "free" means something.

Messages (how much can you actually chat free?) — A daily refresh of 50+ messages is an A. A small but recurring daily allowance is a B. A one-time allowance that runs out is a C. A 3-5 message demo is a D. Nothing free is an F.

Content freedom (is the free tier actually uncensored?) — Genuinely uncensored free content is an A. Mostly uncensored with occasional refusals is a B. Filtered or significantly restricted on the free tier is a C. Censored free with uncensored paid-only is a D.

Friction (how easy is it to start free?) — Guest mode with no signup is an A. Email-only signup is a B. Email + verification is a C. Credit card required for "free" is a D.

Honesty (does the free marketing match reality?) — The free tier delivers what the marketing promises is an A. Minor gaps between promise and reality is a B. Significant gaps is a C. The "free" claim is essentially misleading is a D.

Usefulness (can you actually have a real experience free?) — The free tier is genuinely usable for ongoing interaction is an A. It's enough to test meaningfully is a B. It's a brief taste is a C. It's a locked demo is a D.

The grades

CrushOn AI — Overall: A

MetricGradeWhy
MessagesA~50/day refreshing (≈1,500/mo)
Content freedomAFiltered/unfiltered toggle, genuinely uncensored
FrictionAGuest mode, no signup, no email, no card
HonestyAFree tier delivers exactly what it claims
UsefulnessAGenuinely usable for daily ongoing chat

The only straight-A free tier in the category. The restructured 50/day refresh is genuinely functional (not a demo), guest mode is the lowest-friction entry anywhere, and the unfiltered toggle delivers real uncensored content free. The honest limitations: text-only (no images or voice), and free-tier memory is limited to recent messages. But as a free experience, nothing else matches it. Covered in the full review.

Candy AI — Overall: B

MetricGradeWhy
MessagesBLimited free, enough to test
Content freedomAGenuinely uncensored
FrictionBEmail signup, quick
HonestyB"Free" = test, not ongoing (but honestly presented)
UsefulnessBEnough to evaluate the experience before paying

The most polished overall companion, and the free tier is a genuine taste of that polish — you see the image quality, the conversation quality, the memory — but it's clearly designed as a trial, not ongoing free use. That's honest (it doesn't pretend to be unlimited), and the paid experience justifies the upgrade. The token system means the real cost is $20-40/mo for active multimedia use, which the free tier doesn't fully reveal. Covered in the six-week test.

OurDream AI — Overall: B

MetricGradeWhy
MessagesBLimited free, enough to test
Content freedomANo refusals, genuinely uncensored
FrictionBEmail signup
HonestyATransparent about free limits and paid features
UsefulnessBGenuine test before predictable paid pricing

The most unrestricted platform, and the free tier gives a genuine taste of that freedom. The transparent, bundled paid pricing ($9.99-19.99/mo, no token traps) is the most honestly-presented in the category — what you see is what you pay. Free is a test; paid is the experience, and the value is good. Covered in the 30-day review.

SpicyChat — Overall: C+

MetricGradeWhy
MessagesC+Free access but tightened daily cap
Content freedomB-"Uncensored" but occasional surprise refusals
FrictionBEmail signup, no card
HonestyCMarkets "uncensored" but sometimes flinches
UsefulnessC+Testing only, not ongoing (memory wipes between sessions)

SpicyChat's biggest problem is the gap between marketing and reality. It markets as uncensored but users report mid-conversation refusals. The free tier has tightened without clear communication. And memory between sessions is "basically non-existent," which kills ongoing use. The enormous character library (hundreds of thousands) is the genuine strength. Covered in the full review.

Janitor AI — Overall: C

MetricGradeWhy
MessagesB~50/day on JanitorLLM
Content freedomALimitless Mode, genuinely unrestricted
FrictionBAccount needed for chat (browse without)
HonestyC"Free" model quality is mediocre (~6.5/10), real quality needs paid API
UsefulnessCFree model is a taste, not a good experience

Janitor AI's free tier is technically generous (50 messages, Limitless Mode) but the built-in model is weak enough that the "free" experience misrepresents what the platform can do with a paid API. The massive character library and API flexibility are genuine strengths — on a paid API. Free is for testing the platform and characters, not for judging conversation quality. Covered in the Janitor AI review.

Promptchan (image generation) — Overall: B+

MetricGradeWhy
GenerationsB+10-30 daily gems, refreshing
Content freedomAGenuinely uncensored across modes
FrictionBAccount needed
HonestyAFree limits clearly stated
UsefulnessB+Genuinely usable for daily casual generation

The best free image-generation tier — daily gems refresh, multiple art styles work, and the watermark is the honest trade-off for free. More usable for ongoing free generation than any chat platform's free tier is for ongoing free chat. Covered in the full review.

Perchance — Overall: A-

MetricGradeWhy
AccessAEverything free, no limits
Content freedomANo restrictions
FrictionA+No account, no email, nothing
HonestyAIt's genuinely free, all of it
UsefulnessBGeneration tool, not a companion (no memory, no persistence)

The lowest-friction free experience available — literally nothing required, everything accessible. The usefulness grade drops because Perchance is a generation tool, not a companion; there's no persistent character, no memory, no ongoing relationship. For free one-off generation (stories, images, interactive fiction), it's unmatched. Covered in the AI porn generator free guide.

What the grades mean for you

Start with the A-tier (CrushOn, Perchance) for genuinely free, genuinely usable experiences. CrushOn for companion chat, Perchance for one-off generation.

Test the B-tier (Candy, OurDream, Promptchan) to find the platform you'll pay for — their free tiers are genuine trials of excellent paid products.

Be cautious with the C-tier (SpicyChat, Janitor AI) — they have real strengths (library size, API flexibility) but the free experience doesn't represent the platform well, and the honesty gaps mean you need to know the catches going in.

The line that matters

Every platform graded here is for fictional adult characters only. The grades assess free-tier quality, not content permissiveness beyond the fictional-adults-only line. The safety guide and privacy guide cover the details.

The bottom line

Most AI companion free tiers are C-grade demos marketed as free products. CrushOn AI is the only A, with a genuinely usable daily-refresh free tier, guest mode, and uncensored content. Perchance is the A- for free generation. Candy and OurDream are honest B-grade trials of genuinely excellent paid products. SpicyChat and Janitor AI have real strengths but their free tiers don't represent them well. Use the grades to skip the frustrating tour and go straight to the platforms that deliver on "free."
