We Tested Every Free AI Tier So You Don't Have To

There are over a dozen major AI companion platforms marketing "free" access right now. We signed up for every one of them (or used guest mode where available), used the free tier until we hit the wall, and documented exactly what "free" delivers versus what it promises. Every signup, every paywall, every surprise refusal, every "your free trial has ended" screen — we hit them all so you don't have to.

The process took weeks. We created accounts with dedicated throwaway emails, tested conversations until the daily cap stopped us, pushed content boundaries to see where each platform flinches, and mapped every limitation the marketing doesn't mention. Here's what we found, platform by platform, with nothing smoothed over.

The methodology

We tested each platform the way a real first-time user would: signed up (or used guest mode), started a conversation, escalated to explicit content, continued until we hit a limit, noted every restriction and surprise. Each platform was tested over multiple days to assess daily caps, memory, and consistency.

What we graded: how many free messages before a wall, whether the content was genuinely uncensored, how much friction the signup required, whether the marketing was honest about the free limits, and whether the free experience was useful for more than a 2-minute taste.

What we didn't do: accept sponsored rankings, adjust grades for platforms that advertise with us (none do — we're affiliate-only), or grade based on the paid experience (this is about free specifically).

What we found: the honest summary

Most "free" is a lie. Of the dozen-plus platforms tested, exactly one (CrushOn AI) delivered a genuinely usable, genuinely uncensored, genuinely no-signup free experience. One more (Perchance) was genuinely free for generation but not companionship. The rest ranged from "honest limited trial" (Candy, OurDream) to "three-message demo marketed as free" (multiple smaller platforms we won't name because they don't deserve the traffic).

The free tiers have tightened industry-wide. Every platform we tested has a worse free tier than it did a year ago. SpicyChat was the most dramatic: what was once a genuinely generous free experience has tightened to a daily cap and lost its session memory. CrushOn bucked the trend — its restructured 50/day is actually better structured than its old 100/month — but it's the exception.

"Uncensored" on free is frequently a lie. Several platforms marketing as "uncensored" or "no filter" produced mid-conversation refusals on their free tiers. SpicyChat was the most notable: genuinely marketed as uncensored, but users (including us) hit unexpected content refusals during explicit scenarios. CrushOn's filtered/unfiltered toggle was the most reliable: flip it, and uncensored means uncensored.

Guest mode is massively underused. CrushOn's guest mode — chat NSFW with no signup, no email, no card, nothing — is the single best "free" feature in the entire category, and most people don't know it exists because it's not prominently marketed. It's the fastest way to test whether AI companionship is interesting to you at zero commitment. We used it as our first test for every comparison.

Free-to-start is different from free-to-use. Candy and OurDream are honest about this: their free tiers are trials of premium products, designed to show you the quality before you pay. They don't pretend to be ongoing free services. That's more honest than platforms that claim "free" while locking you out after 5 messages without warning.

What this testing taught us

Three takeaways that apply beyond any specific platform.

The free tier's job is to help you choose, not to be the product. Even the best free tier (CrushOn's) has real limits — daily caps, limited memory, text-only. The free experience is for deciding which platform fits you; the real experience starts at ~$6/month. Optimizing for "stay free forever" leads to a worse experience than optimizing for "find the right platform to pay for."

The genuinely unlimited free path is local. For the technically inclined, running a model yourself (SillyTavern + Ollama, ~1hr setup) is the only path that's genuinely unlimited, genuinely free, genuinely private, and genuinely uncensored — permanently, with no free tier to tighten. The line that matters

Every platform we tested is for fictional adult characters only. Our testing pushed content boundaries to assess where platforms flinch, not to generate content involving minors or real people (which we don't do, and which every reputable platform blocks). Keep all use to fictional adults.
