Grok Ani Region Restrictions: Why the Companions Tab Is Missing

If Ani won't appear in your Grok app, the cause is one of four things: your platform, your region's rollout wave, your subscription tier, or an outdated app. Here's the diagnostic in order, what free accounts actually get, and which workarounds are real.

Short answer: if Ani isn't showing up, the problem is almost always your platform or your wave, not your settings. Grok's Companion Mode launched iOS-first in July 2025 and has stayed that way in practice: the Android rollout that began in spring 2026 is phased, server-side, and wave-dependent, with many paying SuperGrok Android subscribers still reporting no Companions tab months in. Regional availability is similarly wave-based and unpublished. Web and desktop have no companion access, period. Before assuming you're region-blocked, run the diagnostic in order, because tier and app-version problems look identical to regional ones.

| Check | Requirement | If it fails | |-------|-------------|-------------| | Platform | iOS (iOS 17+) is fully supported; Android is phased | iOS device or wait for your wave | | Tier | SuperGrok ($30/mo) or X Premium+ | Lite ($10) and free don't include full Companion Mode | | App version | Latest Grok app | Update, then check Settings → Enable Companions | | Region | Unpublished wave rollout | No manual fix; waves expand over time |

The diagnostic, in order

First, tier. Companion Mode's full experience requires SuperGrok at $30/month (or $300 annually) or X Premium+. The $10 SuperGrok Lite tier does not include full companion features, which surprises a lot of subscribers who assumed any paid tier qualified. These are also separate subscriptions from each other: X Premium+ and SuperGrok bill separately and neither includes the other.

Second, platform. iOS is the real home; you need iOS 17 or later, the latest app, and the Settings → "Enable Companions" toggle, which triggers a one-time avatar download. Android's rollout has been officially "actively closing the gap" since March 2026 while user reports keep showing missing tabs even on updated apps with correct tiers. If that's you, you're in a pending wave, and there is genuinely no manual fix; the gate is server-side.

Third, region. xAI publishes no availability map. Some countries received features later or with modifications, and specific content is also regionally gated: certain outfit interactions and NSFW-adjacent features are restricted by regional policy even where the companions themselves work. So "Ani works but won't do what the clips on X show" can itself be a regional restriction rather than a bug.

What free accounts actually get

Free Grok access includes a rate-limited taste of Companion Mode: roughly ten prompts every two hours, shared across all Grok features, meaning your Ani conversation competes with any other Grok use for the same allowance. The avatars render, voice works, and the affection system tracks progress, but at ten prompts per window, reaching meaningful affection levels takes weeks of patient daily check-ins. It's a genuine demo rather than a usable free product, and the queries hunting for "Ani for free" mostly end at this arithmetic. The full tier-by-tier reality, including what the $30 actually buys, is in our complete Grok Ani access guide.

The workarounds, honestly rated

Updating the app and re-toggling companions fixes the largest share of "missing tab" cases on iOS; do it first. Switching to an iOS device is the only reliable fix for Android wave-waiting, since your subscription and affection progress live on your account, not the device. VPNs are the popular suggestion and the weak one: the gating is substantially account- and server-side, so spoofing location often changes nothing, free VPNs are data-collection businesses, and running one during peak load has been associated with session glitches. And waiting is the unglamorous answer that actually resolves most regional cases, since waves have consistently expanded.

If the restrictions are the dealbreaker

Reasonable position. A $30/month subscription whose flagship feature may not work on your platform, in your region, or with the content freedom the marketing implies is a hard sell, and Grok's content boundaries are additionally in constant moderation flux even where everything works. The companion category's alternatives don't gate by region or platform anywhere near as aggressively: browser-based platforms work wherever a browser does. What each does best, and what they cost against that $30, is covered across our pricing guides and the Grok Ani deep dive, which also covers what genuinely nothing else matches: the 3D animation quality that makes people put up with all of the above.
