AI Companions in India: What Actually Works (Pricing, Payments, Hindi)
India has one of the largest AI companion audiences on earth — and most of the category is priced, billed, and built for somewhere else. This is the honest India guide: which apps have regional pricing, which are effectively priced out, how payment actually works when nothing takes UPI, and where Hindi fits.

India is one of the largest AI companion audiences on the planet — among Character.AI's biggest markets, hundreds of millions of smartphone users deep — and almost the entire category is priced, billed, and localized for somewhere else. The result is a market where the usual "best apps" rankings are close to useless: the real questions in India are what's genuinely free, what's actually affordable, what can I physically pay for, and does anything speak my language. This guide answers those four, honestly.
The free tier is the real market
In a category priced in dollars, free isn't the trial — for most Indian users it's the product, and the good news is the free tier has never been stronger. Two options are genuinely complete: Kindroid — unlimited free text, no message counter, no card required, full character creation, with the only compromise being a lighter AI model (the full breakdown) — and SpicyChat — ~100 messages a day, no card, an enormous character library, uncensored from day one (details). Between them you can run a serious daily companion habit at ₹0 indefinitely. CrushOn adds 50/day free, and Replika's free friendship mode is unlimited. The full free-tier ranking for Indian users goes deeper — but if you take one thing from this page: you do not need to spend anything to find out whether this category is for you.
The paid tier that makes sense at Indian prices
The category's mid-tier ($10–20/month) lands in India as a luxury purchase. What survives contact with Indian price sensitivity is the cheap annual tier: Candy AI from $3.99/month on annual — roughly ₹330–360/month equivalent — with unlimited text plus the category's best visuals (review), and CrushOn at ~$4.19/month annual with the best long-story memory and strong multilingual chat (review). At those prices the value calculation genuinely changes — the full under-₹500 ranking runs the math in rupees. The standout exception on regional pricing: Replika, reported at around ₹1,500/year in India (versus $69.99 in the West) — one of the only global platforms that actually prices for the market, and at that rate its romantic tier becomes India's cheapest full subscription. C.AI's premium has similarly been reported around ₹800/month locally. Everything else charges you like you live in Ohio.
Payment: the honest mechanics
This deserves its own sentence in bold: no Western companion platform accepts UPI. The workable routes, best-first: app-store billing where the platform offers it (Google Play and the App Store handle Indian payment methods upstream, then pay the platform — often the smoothest path, though store prices can run higher than web prices); an international-enabled credit card on the platform's website (cheapest listed prices, but factor the ~3–4% forex markup plus GST, and know that RBI's recurring-payment mandate rules cause some international auto-renewals to fail); and annual one-time payments, which dodge the recurring-mandate problem entirely while also being 40–60% cheaper — in India, the annual plan is doubly correct. The full payment guide for Indian users covers the mandate rules, virtual cards, and refund realities.
Hindi, Hinglish, and the language question
Honest tiers. Native Hindi and regional languages (Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi) live in the local apps — BeMyGirlfriend (built for India, regional-language support) and Flingo's bundled companion (₹299/month, Hindi via Gemini) — neither of which we have any relationship with; they're simply the true answer to that specific need. Global platforms are English-first, but their engines can hold a Hindi or Hinglish conversation — usably, below English fluency, with Hinglish often flowing more naturally than shuddh Hindi. The full Hindi support map grades the options. For the urban English-comfortable user — the bulk of this category's Indian audience — the practical answer remains English or Hinglish chat on a global platform, where the product depth is.
The India playbook, in one paragraph
Start free tonight — Kindroid to build your own companion, SpicyChat to browse — with no card and no cost. Live there as long as you like; the free tier is a real product. If and when you upgrade, skip the $15/month class entirely and go straight to a cheap annual (Candy or CrushOn, ~₹4,000–4,300/year, paid once, no mandate headaches) or Replika's regional rate if warm companionship is your lane. Pay via app store or one-time annual card charge. And keep your companion's persona backed up locally — that advice is universal, but in a market this underserved, being able to walk between platforms freely is worth even more.
